Why Take The 28-Day Zakar Challenge
“See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” Hebrews 3:12-13
Why a 28 Day Discipleship Challenge?
Well, there has been lots of discussion about discipleship in the Western church in the last number of years. And the discussion usually says something like, our modern version of Christianity isn’t consistently producing fruitful, resilient disciples of Jesus. We have amazing teaching and music and events and conferences and retreats and resources; but so many Christians aren’t becoming mature Jesus followers.
So why not?
Well, potentially it is because faith is meant to be lived out, not studied. We cannot simply be consumers of faith. What to I mean by that? We cannot simply read and learn about Christianity through watching more content.
We have to actually practice it!
Yes, good teaching and theology is foundational important, no question! But Jesus didn’t call his disciples to only hear him teach and absorb information. Athletes don’t grow by watching training videos, they have to follow a disciplined plan and show up even when they don’t feel like it!
Jesus said follow me! And his disciples did!
They went with Jesus and did ministry WITH Jesus!
Jesus sent them out and challenged them often to do something difficult—often something they would fail without his help! He sent them out into a storm. He told them to feed thousands. He got them to preach about the Kingdom and heal the sick and cast out demons.
Transformation for the disciples happened through simple obedience over time to Jesus.
But here is a key component:
While Jesus called individuals, he called them into a small community of other men! Jesus never asked them to do something alone, but in two’s or as a community! You need other men to join you in this challenge together! We aren’t meant to live out our faith as individuals. The Bible is clear we are created for community and doing life together.
(see Hebrews 3:12-13; 10:24-25)
The Zakar Discipleship challenge is meant to ground you in God’s truth while getting you to put your faith into action. Each day has rhythms of Scripture and prayer and exercise and being thankful with a daily mission to help form you into a mature disciple of Jesus. This challenge is meant to be a starting point to help you get rooted in key disciplines that will help you become the man God has created you to be for the sake of His Kingdom and glory!
